布基纳法索能源部透露，计划在该国建造总计100兆瓦的八个太阳能公园。
这些项目将在七个不同的地区开发。其中两个容量分别为10兆瓦和20兆瓦的项目将在该国人口最多的城市化地区中心区(Centre Region)开发。其余六个项目分别在Sahel(15兆瓦)、Est (10兆瓦)、Boucle du Mouhoun(15兆瓦)、Hauts-Bassins (10兆瓦)、Nord(10兆瓦)和Cascades(10兆瓦)。这些项目的技术或财务细节，以及将在哪个框架下进行开发等情况还不明朗。
布基纳法索目前严重依赖化石燃料电力供应，能满足国内电力总需求的80%。另20%则进口自加纳、多哥和科特迪瓦。但该国还有约80%的人口仍然无法连接到电网。
布基纳法索目前有33兆瓦的光伏容量，主要为在去年11月下旬投产的Zagtouli太阳能电站。而该国的年均太阳辐射量为19.8 毫焦耳/平方米/天，直接日照总量超3000小时。
