据希腊独立电力传输运营商（IPTO）透露，一条连接希腊大陆和克里特岛的新电网线路于5月24日开始运行。
该线路由两条500 kV直流海底电缆组成，每条电缆长335公里，敷设深度最深可达1200米。这两条电缆将连接位于阿提卡 Koumoundouros的换流站和克里特岛的Damasta变电站。这些电缆的总传输容量为1 GW。
Ariadne Interconnection是IPTO为该项目设立的子公司，负责开发并拥有这条电网线路。2024年11月，中国国家电网公司的全资子公司中国国家电网国际发展有限公司收购了Ariadne Interconnection 公司20%的股份。

将克里特岛并入希腊大陆电网将释放约2.5 GW的新可再生能源容量。克里特岛还将逐步淘汰柴油加油站等高成本的化石燃料设施。这些设施目前用于确保足够的电力供应，并由电力消费者通过其账单进行补偿。IPTO表示，新线路将降低这些成本，从而降低希腊各地的电费。
该项目还将对环境产生重大影响，在运营的第一年将减少40多万吨的二氧化碳排放。 在国际上，这条新的电网线路具有更广泛的意义，因为克里特岛预计将成为两条计划中的海底线路的起点：一条连接克里特岛和塞浦路斯及以色列，另一条连接克里特岛与埃及。
IPTO表示，该项目在创纪录的时间内完成。Ariadne Interconnection公司成立于2018年，项目的建设时间仅用了4.5年。相比之下，IPTO表示，欧洲电网运营商的类似项目花了7年多的时间才完成。
阿提卡-克里特岛电网线路耗资11亿欧元（12.4亿美元），由欧盟和希腊国内共同出资。 新的阿提卡-克里特岛直流输电线路与2021年竣工的从伯罗奔尼撒半岛到克里特岛的另一条174公里长的海底线路不同。那个项目通过一条输送能力为2×200兆伏安（MVA）的线路将克里特岛与希腊大陆连接起来。
Ariadne Interconnection代表着希腊首个高压直流电缆系统。IPTO计划利用获得的经验开发第二条高压直流输电线路，将多德卡尼斯群岛与希腊大陆的高压电网连接起来。
