作为实施迪拜酋长谢赫·穆罕默德·本·拉希德·阿勒马克图姆(Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum)在一个月前推出的50年章程的一部分，迪拜10%家庭的屋顶上将会安装有光伏设施。
迪拜电力和水管理局（DEWA）表示，已经在1月17日举行了住宅太阳能项目的招标，并已与6家公司签订了合同。这一项目将在2019年底前完成，DEWA将承担项目的所有成本，让本国公民享受到切实的福利。
2015年，迪拜启动了Shams Dubai倡议行动，旨在为工商建筑以及住宅家庭建造光伏发电设施。截至去年8月，已注册了超300兆瓦的净计量容量。其中，约50兆瓦已经建成。而DEWA的这一新举措必将再次推动迪拜住宅光伏设施的发展。
这一地区获得大幅补贴的能源价格，阻碍了屋顶设施的开发，而屋主们对此也兴趣不大。但在今年阿布扎比举行的世界未来能源峰会上，该地区光伏行业的一些成员预测，不久之后住宅屋顶光伏将开始兴起。
中东北非地区在传统上一直以一些全球最大的公用事业级项目而著称，但在住宅领域却鲜有动作。DEWA已将中东最大太阳能项目Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum太阳能公园的招标容量扩大了900兆瓦。这一项目的最终容量将达到5吉瓦，还将包括大型储能和氢气设施。
