据埃及政府消息，中国电力技术装备有限公司与埃及政府签署了一份谅解备忘录，将开发一个10 GW的太阳能项目。
该谅解备忘录还由埃及新能源和可再生能源管理局以及埃及电力控股公司签署，为项目开发的初步研究铺平了道路。该项目预计每年将产生约29,784吉瓦时的电力，有助于减少约1,400万吨的二氧化碳排放，每年节省超过10亿美元的天然气成本。
该项目是埃及更广泛的“绿色走廊倡议”的一部分，该倡议旨在增加可再生能源的使用，减少对化石燃料的依赖，也是该国为可续发展所作的部分努力。
埃及电力部长Mohamed Shaker表示：“该项目符合埃及的目标，即到2030年将可再生能源在能源结构中的比例提升至42%，以及2050年的国家气候战略。”
Shaker还表示，该项目加强了埃及和中国之间的历史联系，并证实了埃及可再生能源部门吸引外国直接投资的能力。
去年11月，埃及苏伊士运河经济区（SCZONE）与中国合作伙伴签署协议，将为11个制造类和绿色氢项目投资156亿美元。
